TORONTO – Prime Minister Stephen Harper is convening a meeting of “key cabinet members” in response to the ongoing situation in Ukraine.
The meeting is “in response to the very serious developments” on Saturday, said Jason MacDonald, Harper’s director of communications.
Earlier in the day,the Russian parliament approved President Vladimir Putin’s motion to allow the use of the country’s military in Crimea.
Distinctly pro-Russia, the Crimean peninsula is a part of Ukraine separated from the rest of the country geographically, historically and politically.
It is also where Russia’s Black Sea fleet is based.
MacDonald said the Prime Minister will issue a statement following the meeting.
The prime minister isn’t the only one holding an impromptu meeting on Saturday to discuss Ukraine’s continuing political crisis.
