Man faces mischief charges after First Nations protests in eastern Ontario

Global News

NAPANEE, Ont. – Provincial police say they have charged a man in connection with two protests that occurred this month in Tyendinaga Township in eastern Ontario.

John Boots, 43, of Akwesasne First Nation, was arrested on Saturday and charged with two counts of mischief.

He was remanded in custody and is to appear in bail court today in Napanee.

Police say the investigation is continuing and further charges may be laid.

First Nations protesters have been holding demonstrations in the area between Belleville and Kingston this month to call for a federal inquiry into missing and murdered aboriginal women.

A blockade on a rail line last week caused Via Rail to shut down service on a busy route linking Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal for one day, and passengers had to be bused through the area.
