Suspicious package on bus ties up traffic at Portage and Main

WINNIPEG – Traffic was tied up at the city’s biggest downtown intersection Wednesday afternoon after a “suspicious package” was found on a Winnipeg Transit bus.

The bus was stopped in the curb lane of northbound Main Street and Lombard Avenue, with yellow tape strung across Main in front of the bus. The police bomb squad truck was parked on Lombard.

Traffic was blocked on Main Street at Portage Avenue, with northbound traffic diverted east on Portage. Main Street southbound was also blocked, with traffic diverted west on Bannatyne Avenue.

It appeared nearby buildings were being evacuated.

Police had no further information as of 2:30 p.m.
